1952 Springtime. Hinton St George, an historic village in south Somerset. The Cross, standing 2.49 metres high, is a Grade II* listed building and a Scheduled Monument. Dating from the late 1500s, the medieval Cross is mounted on a base of local honey-coloured Ham stone and on the back is a carving reputed to be of St John the Baptist.

Camera: 1930s Comet Box camera with an aperture of approximately F11 and a shutter speed of approximately 1/30 of a second. Film: Ilford Selochrome (an Orthochromatic film). The film was not sensitive to reddish light and was developed by hand see-sawing through a solution of Ilford ID 11 developer. As the image appeared under the red light, I had to judge the end of development by eye before washing and fixing,
