1962,
March - Jordan. A steep alley with children and donkeys in the Old City of
Jerusalem. The maze of narrow alleys and streets dates mostly from the 16th Century
when the city was surrounded by a wall built by the Ottomans under Suleiman the
Great. Today the Old City is still divided into its original four quarters - not
of equal size and home to three faiths. Some of the old steps remain as steps
but others have been adapted with ramps for light wheeled-traffic. Jordan lost
control of Old City in the six day war with Israel in 1967. Camera
