1963 LAKE TITICACA BOLIVIA at an altitude of 3,812 metres (12,507 feet) in the Andes mountains. A group of Aymara fishermen with their totora reed bundle rafts or balsas. At one time the sails for these boats would have been sheets made from totora reed but by the 1960s the reed had been replaced by cotton. A bed of totora reed can be seen growing in the lake in the mid distance.
