1961 Machu Picchu Peru Dawn at Machu Picchu. In this unique photo the early morning sunlight catches the stepped pyramid and sacred plaza on the left of the picture and an ancient stone shrine on the right. On the top of the pyramid on the left stands a carved granite block, the Intihuatana, sometimes known as the 'hitching post to the sun'. A carved stone standing in the middle of the Principal Plaza is no longer there.
